Republicans jammed through a historically unpopular Supreme Court justice, in a historically short period of time, literally days before the election. They succeeded by ignoring their own voter opinion, their own precedent, their own committee rules, and all other legislative needs including pandemic relief.

And the Supreme Court, now with a 6-3 Republican slant, is wildly unrepresentative of the American people (1/3 of those seats were filled by Trump, who lost the popular vote in 2016) and set to cripple us with damaging conservative opinions on climate change, voter rights, women’s and LGBTQ+ rights, and healthcare for decades to come.

Democrats MUST play hardball to fight back. It’s time to expand the Supreme Court.

The number of Supreme Court justice seats is not Constitutionally mandated, and has fluctuated over the history of our country. Changing the number again now would have precedent AND allow us more accurate representation.

A week and a half from Election Day, five of Vice President Pence’s top advisors tested positive for coronavirus. Five! By any measure, this puts his entourage at serious risk of infection and spreading the disease to those they encounter, which is why CDC guidelines recommend a 14-day quarantine for Pence.

Instead, Pence has chosen to take his team across the country to campaign in person, risking the health and lives of those in communities nationwide.

This has to stop! Add your name to demand Pence stop campaigning immediately and follow CDC guidelines to protect the health of the American people.

Pence argues that his work as VP is “essential.” But there are 16 categories of essential, and campaign surrogate appears nowhere on the list. Furthermore, by federal law, his role as Vice President must be kept separate from all campaign functions to prevent an unfair incumbent advantage. Pence’s very justification for continuing to campaign violates the Hatch Act.

The first presidential debate was a complete catastrophe. Trump, knowing he is polling poorly, entered the arena with one desperate goal: to bully, barrage, and interrupt Joe Biden as much as possible so as to keep him from speaking at all.

The actual purpose of the event, to allow both candidates to communicate with the American people, was left bloodied and abandoned within minutes as even the Fox News moderator repeatedly failed to reign in Trump in his worst state.

Trump has spent four years with his every whim being pandered to by White House cronies and GOP Congressional yesmen. Actually, not just four years – his entire life. Which is why, when he doesn’t get his way, he disintegrates so quickly into a screaming toddler.

Trump repeatedly broke the rules his campaign team agreed to and we were all punished for it. So if Trump can’t follow the rules, the debate commission needs to change them.

Within hours of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s casket being respectfully removed from the Supreme Court, Trump announced his nomination for her replacement. The contrast between the two women could not be starker or more frightening.

Amy Coney Barrett is not just vehemently anti-abortion. She’s anti-LGBTQ rights, anti-healthcare, anti-immigration, and she’s even opposed to Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark 1954 case that desegregated our schools. Her confirmation would secure a 6-3 right-wing majority on the court and send our country’s progress back by 70 years.

Trump and Mitch McConnell are trying to force through a nomination with less than five weeks to Election Day, aiming for an October 29 confirmation. Some states are already voting. 

Trump is terrified of losing this election, and he’s doing whatever he can to rig the system in his favor. This includes stacking the court so that, when he contests losing and declares the election illegitimate (with no evidence), the highest court in the land is on his side.

Children locked in cages. Minority and women’s right trampled while neo-nazi’s and white supremacists are praised as very fine people. Brutal dictators embraced and crucial allies alienated. 125,000 dead Americans with no plan to combat the pandemic, peacefully protesting civilians gassed in the streets, and working families cast into turmoil.

It sounds like a dystopian nightmare, but this is reality in Donald Trump’s America.

Fortunately, these days are numbered if we all do our part end them. If Trump is the disease — and he is — Joe Biden is the cure.

While you might not agree with him on every issue, Biden has the humility to listen and improve as he has shown time and time again. Just two months after taking office, Attorney General William Barr made clear that he would be neglecting his obligation to defend the constitution as America’s top lawyer in favor of serving as Donald Trump’s chief accomplice. That’s when he presented a cherry-picked bastardization of the Mueller Report as a “total and complete exoneration” of Trump even though it said, the exact opposite.

It was the most egregious abuse by an AG in US history at the time, but Barr was just getting started.

Soon after, Barr dropped charges against Trump’s crony and original National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, despite the fact that Flynn had already admitted his guilt, and overruled prosecutors in an unprecedented ploy to let Trump bagman Roger Stone off for seven felony convictions with a slap on the wrist.

Most recently, in a stunning move, Barr announced the resignation of U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman, the prosecutor who has been investigating the crimes of Trump’s and his cronies — even though Berman had not resigned. It took another day for Barr to force Berman out, but the motive for the underhanded ploy could not have been clearer — to obstruct investigations into the president and those who do his bidding.

Barr is repeatedly abdicating his responsibilities in bad faith to help Trump get away with crimes. The attorney general is our lawyer as American citizens, not the president’s fixer, and it’s time to put a stop  to this abuse.

With emergency unemployment assistance expired, record high rates of families facing eviction, and schools pressured to re-opening, Republicans finally have agreed to discuss another COVID-19 relief package with Democrats.

But after the first two weeks of negotiations failed to produce an agreement, Trump, facing ever-lower polling numbers, got desperate and issued an executive order for limited pandemic relief to save his own face.

The order is not only illegal and unconstitutional – it’s also unlikely to produce real relief any time soon.

Trump wants to extend unemployment insurance…by telling states to shell out funding they don’t have, using an administrative system that doesn’t exist. 

He ordered his administration to look at helping families facing eviction…without reinstating the moratorium on evictions that expired at the end of July, or setting aside money for renters or homeowners.

And Trump deferred payroll taxes, without cutting them – meaning employees will still need to pay them back in 2021, while Social Security and Medicare just lost a major funding source.

This is not relief. Congress MUST still act.

Jacob Blake, a Black man, was shot seven times by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin after breaking up a fight. He is now paralyzed.

During the ensuing protests, a white 17-year-old named Kyle Rittenhouse traveled from Illinois to militia the crowd with a rifle – a video expresses Rittenhouse’s clear intent to support local police. And he acted: shooting and murdering two protesters, and injuring a third.

Shortly after, Fox News host Tucker Carlson stated his support of Rittenhouse, saying he “had to maintain order when no one else would” and arguing the dual killing was self-defense.

Carlson has a mission: to stir up and spread open white supremacy that results in Black lives lost. And he has a huge audience. His words may have already convinced more white viewers to grab their guns and charge through protests in the future.

We won’t necessarily convince Carlson to change his deadly message – but we can shut down his show by convincing advertisers to stop paying for it.

Qualified immunity: the legal precedent that shields police officers form being held personally liable for excessive force, unless there’s a previous court case ruling barring that particular type of excessive force.

In practice, this has protected police officers from facing consequences in an endless variety of crimes they commit – from shooting a ten-year-old child bystander to stealing $225,000 from a pair of businessmen under search warrant to needlessly destroying a family’s home with tear gas grenades to, you guessed it, exactly the type of excessive force that killed George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

Dozens of murders disturbingly similar to Floyd’s and Taylor’s have been thrown out in court, the officers free to continue acting disgracefully, simply because qualified immunity established there was no precedent. And an endless string of killer cops may receive the same protections, for the exact same reason going forward.

This may be the law, but it is in now way justice.

If we are ever going to be able to hold cops accountable for their systemic excessive acts of violence against our Black communities, ending qualified immunity is one of the first steps.
