The devastating overturn of Roe v. Wade has left millions of people asking, what now? With a stagnant Congress and a Republican party hellbent on destroying abortion access, the fate of reproductive care in America has seemed grim. While President Biden has recently issued an executive action related to reproductive healthcare, he can still remove the remaining FDA restrictions on abortion pills and make abortion care post-Roe even more accessible.
Mifepristone is FDA-approved, but has extensive hoops that both providers and pharmacies must jump through before prescribing the medication. The requirements are way more strict than necessary for the medical nature of the drug, with paperwork that requires documented informed consent. It’s adds even more to the stigmatization of abortion access.
The FDA requires virtually no restrictions for plenty of medications less safe than mifepristone. President Biden and the FDA need to follow the science and take this critical step in protecting abortion rights.
