Republicans claim the $31 trillion national debt they’ve helped grow with tax cuts for the rich is suddenly too high — a concern they only seem to have when a Democrat is in the White House — and are conveniently targeting programs that serve vulnerable and marginalized Americans in a naked attempt to slash social programs and redistribute even more wealth to the ultra-rich. How convenient!

In an encouraging win for the increasingly beleaguered LGBTQ community, the Democratic-controlled Minnesota state Senate passed a bill banning the cruel and discredited practice of seeking to change people’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Once signed into law, mental health practitioners and professionals will be prohibited from engaging in conversion therapy with anyone under the age of 18 or any “vulnerable adult” — a label that can include those receiving treatment for physical, mental, or emotional conditions.

Democratic Rep. Zooey Zephyr was silenced for a second day Friday by impressively petulant Republicans who are refusing to let her speak on the chamber’s floor until she apologizes for rightfully saying GOP lawmakers would have “blood on their hands” if they ban gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth. House Speaker Matt Regier stood on the floor and spoke with a straight face of preserving the chamber’s dignity — the very thing he and his Republican accomplices are denying Zephyr and Montana’s transgender community.

Gov. Newsom sends National Guard and CHP to tackle San Francisco’s fentanyl crisis
Gov. Gavin Newsom is directing the California Highway Patrol and National Guard to partner with the local police department and the district attorney’s office to stem the trafficking of fentanyl. The multiagency effort comes as San Francisco grapples with an alarming rise in deaths linked to the deadly synthetic opioid, as 2023 is on pace to quickly surpass the 474 fentanyl-related fatalities the city recorded in 2022.

56-year-old Billie R. Davis has been charged with a federal hate crime for stabbing an 18-year-old Indiana University student she assumed was “Chinese.” Davis, who told police she attacked the student because it “would be one less person to blow up our country,” also faces local charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, and battery with a deadly weapon.

Minnesota officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright to be freed
Former police officer Kim Potter, convicted of manslaughter after mistaking her handgun for a Taser and fatally shooting Black motorist Daunte Wright in suburban Minneapolis in 2021, is set to be released from prison Monday after serving 16 months of her two-year sentence. According to sentencing terms laid out by Judge Regina Chu, Potter will spend the remainder of her sentence on probation.

NAACP sues Mississippi over “separate and unequal policing”
The NAACP is fighting back against new legislation passed by conservative, white Republicans effective taking local policing out of the hands of Jackson’s residents and placing it under state control. Derrick Johnson, the national president of the NAACP and a resident of Jackson, said Mississippi’s new policing proposals for the capital city will treat Black people — who make up 83% of the city — as “second-class citizens” and establish a “separate and unequal policing” system. Sounds about white.

Jan. 6 insurrectionist defendant opens fire on police in Texas
Earlier this month, Nathan Donald Pelham, a convicted felon, walked out onto his porch and fired at several deputies attempting to perform a welfare check at his residence. Pelham was charged the previous day with four misdemeanor counts for storming the Capitol during Trump’s failed insurrection and had been instructed to turn himself in later that week. The standoff ended shortly after midnight when authorities left — without arresting or shooting dozens of rounds at Pelham. He was taken into custody peacefully the following day. How about that?
