Conservative Supreme Court justices caught pocketing tens of thousands of dollars on all-expenses-paid “teaching” vacations abroad

In news that should be shocking but feels downright commonplace at this point, conservative Supreme Court justices have been padding their salaries with overseas gigs that one critic likened to “all-expenses-paid vacations, with a little teaching thrown in,” courtesy of George Mason’s Scalia Law School (yep, that Scalia). Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh pocketed nearly $30,000 to teach summer courses in recent years, enjoying posh trips to Iceland and Italy that in no way should be construed as bribes. Neat!

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Biden roasts Marjorie Taylor Greene, Fox News, and Ron DeSantis live on stage

President Biden took dead aim at his many critics at this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner, pulling no punches against the right-wing circus and its bevy of clowns.

Radical Speaker McCarthy is a huge problem for America

John Burrows for Congress: John Burrows is the young, charismatic leader we need to solve that problem and send McCarthy packing. We can’t risk another day — let alone two more years — of letting Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz pulling Kevin McCarthy’s strings and turning our Congress into a circus of conspiracy. Can you chip in to send John Burrow to Congress and send McCarthy home in disgrace?

Josh Hawley absolutely taken to task over “mighty man” claim
Sen. Hawley, who was famously seen running away from the very Jan. 6 insurrectionists he enthusiastically saluted via fist-pump hours earlier, brought his campaign for manliness to a religious event over the weekend, and his critics were less than impressed. The Missouri Republican and man definitely rooting for the wrong side in The Handmaid’s Tale actually wrote a book called “Manhood” and told men attending the Stronger Men’s Conference of the importance of being a “mighty man of valor,” prompting a tidal wave of internent thoughts and feelings from his many critics.

Despite pleas from nonbinary son, Montana governor signs anti-trans bill banning care
Montana joined an alarming number of states to ban gender-affirming health care for minors when its Republican governor, Greg Gianforte — who catapulted to the national spotlight in 2017 after body-slamming a Guardian reporter — signed the state’s latest anti-LGBTQ bill, despite protest from his nonbinary son, David Gianforte. Family values, amirite?

Florida principal forced to resign over Michelangelo’s “pornographic” David visits sculpture

The Tallahassee Classical School thrust itself into the zeitgeist for all the wrong reasons last month when it forced out principal Hope Carrasquilla over a middle school art lesson that included an image of David, which prompted aggressively reactionary parents you definitely do not want to have a beer with to complain about…pornography. Carrasquilla and her family were subsequently invited to visit Florence’s famed Accademia Galleria to see the majestic David sculpture in person, a trek made by — ahem — hundreds of thousands of Americans every year.

GOP Gov. Greg Abbott ripped for “despicable” characterization of mass shooting victims
Gov. Abbott simply couldn’t help himself over the weekend referring to the five innocent victims gunned down outside Houston by an assault-rifle-wielding neighbor as “illegal immigrants.” Besides not being accurate — at least one of the victims was a legal US resident — Abbott’s xenophobic words were callous and cruel. But then that’s the point. Dehumanize, rinse, and repeat.

GOP Sen. Mike Lee’s tweet turbocharges bullying of professor
Utah Republican and family values cheerleader Mike Lee took it upon himself to amplify a conservative college rag’s hit job on a BYU professor who had the temerity to share her transgender child’s struggle with mental health and her belief that the Mormon church should care for queer members. Lee’s tweet lamenting societal acceptance of the LGBTQ community unleashed a barrage of online abuse directed towards the professor and her family. It’s a familiar Republican tactic — blow whistle, unleash hounds, claim to be simply asking questions.

Top political adviser to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul resigns after bombshell report
Adam C. Sullivan resigned abruptly following a New York Times report detailing his divisive workplace presence and demeaning behavior towards female colleagues. Good riddance. Leave the misogyny and toxic masculinity to the Republicans, and let Democrats get on with the business of materially improving people’s lives.

First Republic Bank seized, sold to JPMorgan Chase
Regulators seized troubled First Republic Bank early Monday and sold all of its deposits and most of its assets to JPMorgan Chase Bank in a bid to head off further banking turmoil. San Francisco-based First Republic is the third midsize bank to fail in two months and the second-biggest bank failure in US history, behind only Washington Mutual, which collapsed at the height of the 2008 financial crisis. Buckle up, folks. It’s getting bumpy.

“A carbon bomb”: Biden is backing another Alaska fossil fuel project
To the dismay of climate activists and concerned young people everywhere, the Biden team is planning to restart yet another stalled Trump-era energy project in Alaska — and Republicans are delighted, so you KNOW it’s a bad idea.

Today’s Action: Tell your senators to reject Kevin McCarthy’s ridiculous budget proposal!

With the United States rapidly approaching the current federal debt ceiling, Speaker McCarthy has made it clear that he plans to hold the entire economy hostage unless the Biden administration agrees to catastrophic budget cuts to America’s social safety net. Republicans are calling for $4.5 trillion in cuts, including 22% from the Veterans Administration, an end to Pell Grants for poor college students, killing President Biden’s student loan cancellation plan, repealing green energy tax incentives, and eliminating $80 billion from the IRS’ budget — which would cause the government to LOSE even more money — but not a penny taken from the Pentagon’s coffers, of course.

All that for a measly one-year extension of the debt ceiling, so we can go through this whole preposterous standoff again before next year’s general election. The GOP bill passed the House last week, but Democrats in the Senate now have the chance to stop the madness.

Call (202-224-3121) or write your senators and tell them to reject McCarthy’s ridiculous proposal and raise the debt ceiling without cutting crucial investments!

We cannot allow Speaker McCarthy and his clown caucus to continue using the entire economy as a bargaining chip to fulfill the Republican dream of repealing trillions of dollars of vital services.

Kevin McCarthy doesn’t care about government spending when it comes to the military, but he sure seems keen on stripping critical resources from ordinary Americans.

Call (202-224-3121) or write your senators and tell them to say NO to McCarthy’s awful budget proposal!
