Tell New York City Mayor Eric Adams to stop his cruel homeless encampment sweeps!

According to the most recent NYC CoC Homeless Populations and Subpopulations Report, 1 in every 106 New Yorkers are homeless. That’s about 80,000 men, women, and children without their basic needs met. While many spend their nights in the city’s shelters, over 2,000 still sleep on the streets every night. While these people suffer and fight to rebuild, NYC Mayor Eric Adams decided it was time to uproot 239 encampments in under two weeks.

The sweeps are cruel, often only functioning to push a vulnerable community from one outdoor place to the next and intimidating them with police clean-up crews– sometimes even throwing away personal belongings. The issue of homelessness can only be solved through sustainable housing, not enforcement.

After an unprecedented public health crisis that left many wondering how they’d survive financially, homelessness and eviction rates are sky high. Many homeless New Yorkers are still untrusting of the shelter system, and for good reason – sweeps like this do nothing to build trust that they will be cared for. Especially when their Mayor is claiming religious justification for the upheaval of their homes – saying ““I can’t help but to believe that if Matthew, Mark, Luke and John was here today, he would be on the streets with me, helping people get out of encampments.”

Adams’ actions are not reflective of “help”, it’s reflective of haphazard, uninformed policy-making.
